About aquaculture in the Waikato

Aquaculture is an important industry to the Waikato region, producing more than $90 million in exports in 2023 and accounting for 17% of the total export value of New Zealand’s aquaculture industry.

With a reputation for producing sustainable, healthy and high value products, the industry is poised for considerable value growth with marine farms in the region occupying both the Coromandel and parts of the West Coast.

Greenshell mussels and Pacific oysters are the region’s primary products, but there are opportunities for fed fish and other aquaculture, like seaweed, as well as the diversification of the industry into new markets.
