Growing Together – Whakatupu Ngātahi is our region-wide aquaculture strategy which has a vision for the Waikato to be world-class in sustainable and innovative aquaculture management with a doubling of the region’s export growth to $180 million by 2044.
Our vision is bold and is underpinned by partnering with industry, iwi and local communities, government agencies as well as science and innovation organisations to achieve it.
We will work with iwi, industry and communities as well as scientists and research institutes to create jobs and grow a prosperous industry.
We will maximise existing farming space and explore opportunities for new spaces in appropriate locations to support industry growth.
We will protect our oceans and waterways from the spread of invasive pest species to minimise their impact on our fisheries.
We will strengthen our market position by investing in new species, methods and technologies to support a sustainable and productive industry
We will think beyond the needs of today so that we can ensure a thriving and sustainable industry for years to come.
Aquaculture is an important industry to the Waikato region, producing more than $90 million in exports in 2023 and accounting for 17% of the total export value of New Zealand’s aquaculture industry.
With a reputation for producing sustainable, healthy and high value products, the industry is poised for considerable value growth with marine farms in the region occupying both the Coromandel and parts of the West Coast.
Greenshell mussels and Pacific oysters are the region’s primary products, but there are opportunities for fed fish and other aquaculture, like seaweed, as well as the diversification of the industry into new markets.
The first ocean kingfish farm in New Zealand. A pilot programme for seaweed aquaculture. New technology that will increase oyster production. Supporting local economy and ecology, and creating job opportunities.
