About the strategy

We are poised to elevate the Waikato region’s standing from being a significant player in New Zealand’s aquaculture industry to one that is world-class.

Growing together – Whakatupu Ngātahi, provides the blueprint to enable aquaculture growth in the region as we consider innovative ways to better use existing farming space and explore opportunities for new sustainable farming, both on land and in the open ocean.

It brings together industry, iwi and local communities, government agencies as well as science and innovation organisations to develop agreed priorities and outcomes to realise a productive, resilient and inclusive aquaculture industry in the Waikato.

What the strategy intends to deliver

Growing together – Whakatupu ngātahi promotes a growth pathway for aquaculture to become a more productive industry that continues to support local and regional prosperity. As such, it intends to deliver on the following:
  • Identify the means to grow, enable and manage sustainable aquaculture in the region.
  • Maintain sustainable infrastructure that supports the needs of the aquaculture industry, such as processing facilities, wharves, boat servicing and storage facilities.
  • Provide for iwi and mana whenua to assert their tikanga and be a key player in the region’s aquaculture industry.
  • Improve environmental quality and maintain coastal water quality from marine farm operations.
  • Address water quality from land-based sources of pollution and sedimentation, in particular in the Firth of Thames catchments.
  • Provide more opportunities for employment and economic growth in the region’s communities.
  • Provide better and more equitable access to social and economic opportunities.
